⚓️ unstoppable domains is a unicorn
gm.
a slow news week continues.
but I think we know what that means…something is brewing.
and now that my coffee is ready, let’s get into the newsletter for the day.
ALPHA ⚓️
we’re very close to ENS subdomains.
oh, you haven’t heard about them? us ENS-heads (ENSers?) haven’t shut up about them for the last month, so I’ll fill you in.
oh, you hadn’t heard about them? us ENS-heads (ENSers?) haven’t shut up about them for the last month, but I’ll fill you in.
there’s a technical explanation of how this will all work, but I’ll spare you the details (because do you care anyway?).
all that applies to you is the rollout of “wrapping” will allow you to *trade* ENS subdomains (ENS squatters have been using this information to swoop on surnames over the last few months).
so let’s say you own your last name as an ENS domain…and now you want to have different wallet desinations set up for each one of your children.
currently, kardashian.eth can become:
khloe.kardashian.eth
kim.kardashian.eth
kourtney.kardashian.eth
but up until this point, only the owner of the domain kardashian.eth could create and have access to each of those different subdomains.
with ENS wrapping though, that no longer will be the case.
instead, the owner of kardashian.eth (let’s call her Kris) could “wrap” the subdomain of each name and gift it (or sell it) to their offspring so they had control over it. this would allow them to update everything from their end (including their wallet information).
pretty nifty, huh? it’s set to start “soon”, and when it launches, it’s sure to catch some eyes. this is not even something that can be done with .com’s so it’s quite the innovation.
all right, that’s all my ENS talk for today. I promise…I’m done.
BETA ⚓️
ah ha! not so fast. I’ve tricked you. I won’t be talking about ENS, I’ll be talking about their competitor - Unstoppable Domains, which just became a “unicorn”.
to all the non-Web2 boomers reading this…a unicorn is a startup with a $1 billion valuation. they’re not exactly rare these days, but with their Series A (essentially means their first wave of investment from venture capital firms), Unstoppable Domains have put themselves in a pretty exclusive club (especially for a Web3 company).
and for all 7 of my Web2 readers…Unstoppable Domains is very much *not* ENS…but it’s the same general idea. instead of using .eth, they have a plethora of cool Web3-related ones…like .nft, .crypto, and .wallet.
though I’ve personally never bought or used Unstoppable Domains, the general consensus is that it’s the RC Cola to ENS’s Coca-Cola. while it has a lot of the same functionality, its web checkout looks more like conventional domain marketplaces like Namecheap or Godaddy. you pay in dollars instead of ETH and you don’t have to connect a wallet either.
though I’ve personally never bought or used Unstoppable Domains, the general consensus is that it’s the RC Cola to ENS’s Coca-Cola.
that’s not what makes them inferior though, to be clear. it’s mostly that they haven’t penetrated the culture yet. I rarely come across a .nft on Twitter…while you can’t post a single tweet without a .eth person swooping in to shill their “grails” to you.
anyone who’s anyone uses ENS and they might have an Unstoppable Domain *just in case*.
that’ll make it an uphill battle for Unstoppable, but they have big ambitions not only with their funding now but also with their name. they’re “unstoppable” for godsake…which would only become more ironic if all this didn’t work out.
DELTA ⚓️
Madonna is one of us after all. if I had a dollar for every regret I have in the NFT space, I’d have as much money as her.
I don’t feature enough of other people’s content on here. I recently discovered the Overpriced JPEGs podcast from Bankless and Carly Reilly. her sitdown posted this week with Andrew Wang is a good listen and particularly relevant for my Cool Cat faithful out there.
