⚓️ doodles 2: electric dood-a-loo
gm. I have a lot to get into today, so let’s hop to it. I’m 2 Dood 2 Furious.
ALPHA ⚓️
last night, Doodles’ new CEO Julian Holguin took the stage in NYC to deliver a keynote speech (think an Apple event but for NFTs) and proceeded to unload rainbow vomit on everyone in attendance.
figuratively of course.
this morning, everyone is understandably buzzing from the Doodles event (that oddly didn’t have an open bar). with announcements that they were bringing Pharrell on as Chief Brand Officer as well as the head of ‘Doodles Records’ to having the Chainsmokers perform, Doodles may finally be the ones to make music NFTs an actual thing (remember, Julian Holguin is the former CEO of Billboard).
the biggest news from the event was Julian teasing Doodles 2 though.
2oodles (as they should have been called) will have swappable traits, meaning that with no gas, you’ll be able to change the look of your Doodle NFT. in order to facilitate that kind of customization, Julian hinted that they may not be long for the Ethereum main net (aka Layer 1).
a project of Doodles prominence and stature moving to an L2 (Layer 2) technology would be massive news in the space. Yuga has hinted about moving from Ethereum after their Otherside debacle but has yet to work on making it a reality.
however, Doodles 2 will need to use another chain in order to keep its promises, otherwise, the microtransactions of people changing their Doodle’s appearance would become too costly.
now who will get the “contract” for Doodles 2 (so to speak)? that was not hinted at, but many have speculated Flow or Immutable are in play as the L2 chains of choice.
but no matter what, Doodles 2 will attempt what no other NFT brand has tried before…and that is to move the culture (if only slightly) away from Ethereum. crazy and exciting times.
BETA ⚓️
for every Doodles event, there are likely 10 others in NYC that don’t get near the same amount of attention.
it’s how these things work, as anyone who ever threw a party in college will tell you.
Moonbirds, Deadfellaz, GoblinTown, and even ApeFest (just to name a few) had their events last night mostly overshadowed by Doodles…but that’s what you risk when you all schedule on top of each other.
it makes me wonder how essential IRL events like NFT NYC will be in the future of NFTs. big conferences like ComicCon, where all announcements are made in-house, but only cater to the big studios, make more sense than these SXSW-styled event parties.
especially as NFTs become more “corporate” with the Silicon Valley influence (Doodles already busted out a slideshow, like it was their holiday party), announcements will need to be controlled, show ROI, and increase floor prices. you won’t just be able to have a party with an open bar.
luckily, it’s not that way just yet; people are still having loads of fun and alcoholic drinks at NFT NYC. but it’s certainly trending away from that model and no doubt many projects will look to recreate the Doodles event over the next year.
we’re likely in the golden age of NFT events, so get to them while they’re still cool.
DELTA ⚓️
to show some love to projects other than Doodles, I’ve picked out some cool things I’ve seen from NFT NYC on Twitter, including merch and design choices:
