Sewer Passes continue to fly but that hasn’t stopped other projects from giving up on the Yuga monopoly apparently. there is *still* news breaking all across the NFT world this week.
conveniently, they are all from projects that live rent-free in my head, so I have a lot to write about too.
as always…I’ll keep this as petty as possible.

Doodles acquire animation studio 🌈
Doodles continues to have more of a presence in January than they had for the last 6 of 2022 combined.
on Monday, they made a splash by acquiring an animation studio called Golden Wolf. if you head over to Golden Wolf’s replies, you’ll see their fans are *not* happy…calling them brainwashed sell-outs.
the Doodles community seems much more excited about the move (understandably). their IP is already iconic (by NFT standards), so they’re trying to make that leap into the *mainstream* with an animation studio who can bring them to the screen in a few years.
(that once again is the entire strategy surrounding Doodles 2…to have that “Top Shot moment”)
however, detractors (*raises hand*) will say that Doodles continues to throw money at a wall to see what sticks.
are they music NFTs (see: Pharrel partnership and their CEO’s background)? are they bridging the gap between the IRL world and Web3 with their live events (see: SXSW, NFT NYC)? or are they going into gaming (see: Doodle Putt and Space Doodles)?
I’m not going to pretend how to run a million dollar business (who are we kidding, yes I am), but shouldn’t they stick to doing one thing well before they throw money at something else? from an outsider’s view, they seem rather rudderless…opting to be whatever is cool at the moment.
but perhaps everything will click together once their next phase is finally unveiled and I’ll once again be wrong.

Porsche NFTs
I texted my dad on Sunday night. he’s a big fan of cars…in particular Porsches…and I wanted to let him know that they were dropping an NFT on his birthday for .911 ETH each (and for that reason, I would not be getting him one).
his response?
“ridiculous. like Porsche needs more $$”
this seemed to be sentiment even from people who know NFTs well…as on Monday the Porsche NFTs didn’t sell out and then were selling *below* that .911 ETH floor price within the hour.
it’s another example of when brands entering Web3 goes wrong. add them to the classics like Pepsi and Tiffany and Co. who want to make money from NFTs without having to put in any actual work.
(relatable, tbf)
the only good news I can parse from this is that maybe I stand a chance of getting my dad a Porsche NFT along with a Bill Murray NFT…on his birthday *next year* when they’re closer to 0.

Nyan Balloon
the open edition meta continues to thrive…this time with Nyan Balloons.
remember Nyan Cat? an OG internetwork, its creator Chris Torres has been deeply immersed in the Web3 community over the past 2 years.
so when he created an open edition of his latest work…the Nyan Balloon…he priced it basically for free to reward his community and fans of the original Nyan Cat.
and it has already rewarded his community tenfold.
with some cool burn dynamics disguised as a “color change station,” many have been swept up in the catmania frenzy.
after minting for only .0077 ETH each, they’ve ascended to .12 ETH each as I write this. and with the little bit of game theory that goes into changing your cat’s balloon color, who knows what the next few days could store?
let this be another hard lesson for you…never bet against nostalgia.

Azuki on the rise…
it is crazy that a project we once thought was run by a serial rugger is now ascending to the *top* of the top.
as mentioned above, there has been no clear rival to the Yuga and their Bored Apes so far. though many Discords have apparently exuded those “vibes,” it’s been a borderline monopoly.
but maybe…possibly…is there a small chance that Azuki *might* one day be a legitimate competitor?
why do I think this? per usual, I have no quantitative data to support my theory. I just got that good ol’ qualitative stuff.
1) that Azuki is cool…2) their community *really* loves them…3) their art is recognizable and unique…4) they are innovating…and most importantly, 5) it’s starting to look like they can do no wrong.
sure…the stink of the Zunks lingers, but their newest teaser is almost a year in the making. they’re clearly sticking around and continuing to build their own ecosystem…one full of rich lore and now apparently animation.
to me, it’s clear they’re in another tier now (I can tell because I’m FOMO’ing the Beanz).
I can no longer fade them. and neither should you.
see you Thursday.
